So 2 weeks ago was the weekend my brother Zac flew out east from Wisconsin to visit with the family. His girlfriend Brigid came along for the trip, too, so the family all got to finally meet her, and she was out of town when I visited Zac back in August so I hadn’t met her yet either. She seems nice, she was kind of quiet but that might’ve been just because she didn’t know us all, and to be honest, our family can be pretty loud and obnoxious, so I can’t blame an outsider for maybe being intimidated or shy. But it’s pretty clear that she shares Zac’s sense of humor. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a girl repeatedly say “tooling for anus” before. They flew in on the Friday of the last Zuul show, and Dad picked them up from BWI. I was at work and in class all day pretty much, from 8am until about 6pm, and then I finally got free and slogged through traffic to get to Dad’s house and hang out with them for a couple hours before meeting up with the band to load up our equipment and head to the show. As I posted already, the show went well, crazy atmosphere, hopefully the family all enjoyed seeing me and my friends make a spectacle of ourselves. The next day, I came back down to Dad’s house, and in the afternoon Zac and Brigid and I piled into my rusty old Taurus and I drove them down to Delaware to spend the weekend at Mom’s house. It was good to see everyone, I hadn’t been down there to see Mom or anyone myself since the summer, basically since school started I really just haven’t had any free weekends for it. But now that the holidays are starting up and the semester is winding down, I’ll be able to visit a lot more often -- probably at least 3 seperate occasions between now and Xmas. On Saturday night we tried to go up to Ocean City to have some fun in the arcades, but we ended up getting there right when everything was closing, which sucked. We figured we’d have at least an hour, but it turned out that we drove up there for nothing. That was a bummer. Definitely over the holidays we’ll have a proper Ocean City trip with skee-ball and claw machines and everything. It’s funny, they live right in Rehoboth near the boardwalk, but we go to Ocean City all the time, especially in the off-season because they have stuff open year round and Rehoboth doesn’t. On Sunday Zac’s friend Robbie came by with the family and we went down to the Rehoboth boardwalk and it was amazing nice out for November. Tons of people down at the beach for the off-season, noone actually in the water or anything, but lots of people just out, walking their dogs (which isn’t allowed there in the summer). Robbie’s son Trent wanted to play in the sand, but none of the adults were willing to accompany him, so I went with him and got sand in my shoes and climbed up a big mountain of sand with him. It was fun. By the end of our stay with Mom, we were so ridiculously overfed that we didn’t want to eat anything for a couple days. We drove back up to Dad’s Sunday night and told him we didn’t want to go get dinner, but by the time we got there we’d rethought it. When we got there, though, Dad wasn’t feeling too well. It was probably just that he’d been drinking on an empty stomach, but he was in bad shape for a few hours, out on the porch in the cold sweating bullets, we were worried about him. But by the next day he was fine. He just got diagnosed with Diabetes a few weeks ago, though, so it’s something to worry about. They flew out on Monday afternoon, and I didn’t have work til noon so I came by in the morning to have breakfast and see them off. Zac’s coming back for Christmas, though, so I’ll see him again soon. -al
