I can’t believe it’s already about halfway into the semester. It’s really rushing by. My classes are going ok. Of my 4 classes, only 2 are English, which is the smallest amount of English courses I’ve taken in a semester in a long time. And one of those English courses is actually a low level Gen. Ed. credit, so it’s not as hard as a lot of English courses I’ve been taking lately. It’s kind of refreshing, to not have 4 classes with long papers due all the time. My essay class is my only really heavy duty writing class, and I’m enjoying it so far. Essays are one of my favorite formats for writing, so I’m trying to sink my teeth into the assignments, although it’s hard to pick a topic and narrow it down to the get the best results. The professor encourages us to keep a notebook just to write in every day to get ideas. I haven’t really been doing that, but I feel like I write so much on this site and elsewhere online that that’s enough. I don’t really like to write on paper unless I have to, anyway, I prefer to type. I’ve already used some of my journal writings as a basis for my first essay, which was about my history with roommates. I’ll probably post that here sometime soon. The professor has the frustrating habit of speaking very very softly, which in itself is no crime. But when you’re supposed to be lecturing to a room full of people, it’s maddening to have to lean forward and listen extra hard to just to understand what he’s saying. The past couple weeks, he held personal conferences with everyone during class hours, which meant there were 2 weeks where I didn’t have to go to that class at all except for the day of my conference. So it was pretty nice to go home a couple hours early those days. My Geography class is going alright. I think it’s an interesting subject and the professor is very knowledgeable, but he’s also very annoying. He just acts like an obnoxious game show host when lecturing, and makes a lot of unfunny jokes. He also does things like when he collects tests he walks around the room picking the papers up and looking at the answers people wrote and making faces in response to how well they did, which strikes me as really rude and unprofessional. And a couple of his assignments have been really difficult, just a lot of jumping through hoops and doing research. We had to do these state profiles, filling up several pages worth of information, and it took me longer than expected to finish it, so on the day it was due, I decided to skip class just to have an extra hour to work on it. Towards the end of the class period, I still wasn’t done, but decided to just drop it off at the professor’s office. Unfortunately, my timing was bad and I went there just as he was coming from class, and when I tried to hand it in, he pointed out that it was incomplete and made me take it back to finish and hand in late. And while I finished most of it by the next class period, the errors and the lateness penalty resulted in a pretty crappy grade. My film class is going well, though. I’m not a big film buff but a lot of what we’re covering seems like it’s already kind of common knowledge to me, and we spend a lot of class time just watching film clips. I had one photo assignment stressing me out, because I don’t own a camera and I had to buy a disposable one, and I got a cheap one without a flas because I was broke, and so none of the pictures developed well, and it was the day before it was due so I had to wait until the next week to do it over and turn it in late. I was also stressed about the big project for the film class, because I wasn’t sure what to do my project on. We don’t have to film anything, just write a treatment and a script. And on the day that we were supposed to present our ideas to the class, I was still racking my brain. But while sitting in class, I came up with a good idea for what I want to do. My idea is a ‘behind the scenes’ featurette like they have on a lot of DVDs, but it will be for Cabbagehead, the movie my friend Mike made that I acted in last year. I’ll just interview him and use that as a basis for the script. I think it’ll work out well. Things are crazy busy these days, though. Right now I’m in the middle of a 3 week period in which I work every single day. Plus class most of those days. It’s a hell ride. But I’ll get through it. -al
