Yesterday I headed up 95 to Newark, Delaware to visit my old stompin grounds and reconnect with some friends. I think the last time I hung out with Scott was between semesters back in January. We talked about getting together earlier this summer while he was on vacation for a couple weeks, but that didn’t pan out, so I decided to just go hang out for the day while I still have time before the summer’s officially over for me at the end of this month and I’m back into my busy school schedule. I tried to get in touch with some other Newark friends, Chris and Tommy, but neither of them could make it out, which was disappointing, but maybe next time.

Scott’s still living with Uttie, who we both went to high school with, and I was greeted at the door by Drake, Uttie’s dog, who was a 5-month old puppy last time I saw him. He was hyper and crazy then, and still is, but bigger and more imposing. He’s just a goofball, though, so excitable. At first I freaked him out a little, just by being unfamiliar, and he’d bark and stay on the defensive. After a while he was clearly playing, not attacking, but he plays rough, and we had to check him a few times. But still, a real fun puppy.

Another mutual friend from high school who’s relocated to Newark, Steve, came by to hang out for a bit. I swear, if I ever decided to live in the past and never deal with anyone I met after age 18 again, I could move to Newark and have no problems. Actually, I wish I reconnected with people from h.s. more often, some of them are the best friends I’ve had and/or the coolest people I’ve ever known. So me and Scott and Steve went out to get some coffee and read magazines and shoot the shit for a while. Carlos, a friend of Scott’s that I met and jammed with a little when I lived there 3 summers ago, came by to hang out for a bit too.

We were on the outside patio a couple floors up from the ground at the coffee place when we had a weird exchange with a guy walking through the parking lot down below. He had headphones on, and Scott noticed him apparently singing along, and the guy caught Scott looking at him, and started getting all brolic, shouting stuff up at us. I didn’t realize what was going on right away, and at first thought he was, like, talking to himself with headphones on, and Steve and I started laughing, which got the guy even more pissed off. He kept walking in the opposite direction, still shouting bizarre threats at us. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t run into him later that night.

On the walk back to Scott’s house, we started to feel raindrops about halfway down Main Street, and we started to jog the rest of the way, but by the time we got back, less than 10 minutes later, we were completely soaked. Summer rain is crazy like that. Scott let me borrow a shirt while I hung mine up to dry (by the time I left a few hours later, it was still soaked, so I need to bring him back his shirt next time I’m there). When the rain settled down for a bit, we ventured out and hit the liquor store and went halfsies on a box of Magic Hat. We spent the rest of the night mostly hanging out and watching TV, and I played some of my works in progress for Scott, and left him the CD so he could get more acquainted and give me some feedback. I ended up not getting onto the road until well after midnight, but my beer buzz had faded enough that I was good, and I get home pretty late most nights anyway. Hopefully I’ll get back out to Newark later this month to give Scott his shirt back and see more people before I go back to school.
