2004-07-23 - 12:52 p.m. we said, we said, let's sing it again
About 6 months ago, I took J.G. to see one of my favorite current live bands, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, and she loved it and had a great time, so when he came back to the Black Cat, she was all ready for another show, and decided to bring her 17-year-old brother, John, along for his first club show. After dinner at Cheeburger Cheeburger, we drove down to D.C. in the rain, and got to the club just as the first opener, Tigers & Monkeys was finishing their set. The 2nd opening band, Radio 4, are from New York City and sing with British accents and wear suits onstage and play that stylish indie rock version of dance music. They were alright, some of the tunes were good, and J.G. enjoyed them. I'm tempted to say mean things about their auxillary precussionist, but I know from personal experience that's near impossible to look cool playing congas. In the half dozen or so times I've seen Ted Leo before, he's usually had a keyboardist and sometimes a 2nd guitarist in the band, and occasionally even a violinist, but this was the first time I've seen the Pharmacists play as just a 3-piece. Also, at the last show, they had a different drummer for some reason, and it kind of threw off their usual dynamic, but this time, the regular drummer, Chris, was back on the throne. The stripped down power trio sound suited them fine, and the material they played from the new album dropping in October is pretty consistently rocking stuff. The set was pretty evenly split between songs from the 2 old albums and the new one, so it was a nice chance to catch the new stuff and hear lots of old favorites. The setlist (approximately): My Vien Ilin Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone? Biomusicology Me and Mia Under The Hedge I'm A Ghost The High Party Counting Down The Hours Hearts Of Oak new song Timorous Me Shake The Sheets 2nd Ave, 11AM new song (or possibly a cover) encore: Dirty Old Town Parallel or Together? It was a pretty loud show and I think on the ride home we were all regretting not bringing earplugs a little. But still, another great show from one of my favorite bands right now.
