This past weekend, J.G. made our 2nd trip of the summer down to Rehoboth Beach to visit with my mom and, of course, catch some time on the beach. Since J.G. just started her summer internship last week, she wasn't really at liberty to take off any days for a 3-day weekend, so we made it a 2-day trip. And since I'm pretty much expected to work late either Friday or Saturday night every weekend, I took the Friday so I'd be free for Sat-Sun. We made plans to leave on Saturday morning, so I set my alarm early. But after I'd been up for a bit and hadn't heard from J.G. yet, I went back to bed for a bit, since I'd had to work til 1am and was still plenty tired. Finally around 11am I decided to call her and see what was up, and her mom said she'd left already. And sure enough, 5 minutes later she showed up, and I hadn't showered or anything yet. But I cleaned up and packed pretty quickly, and we got on the road around noon. Mom had to work all day Saturday, so we stopped by her store to say hi, after stopping by home to get beach towels and say hi to Joe, and hitting up Wendy's for some lunch. Then, we were on our way to the beach. We didn't get touch down on the sand until 5 or 6pm, but it was kind of nice because the peak hours were over so there was less people traffic, and the sun was still out but a little less intense. Last time we both got a little burned, so I was thankful for that. We played around in the water a lot, even though there were practically no waves. After we came home and showered and Mom and Joe got home from work, we hit the boardwalk at night and did all the cliche stuff, ice cream cones and slices of Grotto pizza and skee ball. I love skee ball. It's not as good in Rehoboth as it is in Ocean City, but we still had fun. I was impressed at how good J.G. was at it. She got on a real hot streak and we kept winning prizes, the guy handing them out got real sick of us. They have this system where if you win the lowest level prize three times, you can trade it in for the next highest up level prize. And we kept winning with the minimum scores (which is in itself not easy), and kept trading in until we had two of the 3rd level prizes, which were these cute plush bulldogs. But with boardwalk games, it's not really about the prizes, it's more about just playing. But it was still cool to win something. The next day, the whole family went out to the inlet, where Joe likes to surf, and we all got to lay out in the sun and play on the beach in a less crowded, less tourist-y area. I like the beach, but I lived there for years so I can really take it or leave it, but J.G. loves it, so I like to take her down there, I know how happy it makes her. We had tasty BBQ for dinner and Grammy came over. All in all a nice family weekend. I might try and get down there by myself one more time before I go back to school in the fall. -al
