bugs!

Awww yeah, they're here. If you live pretty much anywhere in North America where it's warm yet, you know what I'm talking about. People have been talking about it for weeks, but I still wasn't quite prepared for the cicadas. It's just wild shit.

They started showing up here last week, but I hadn't really seen but one or two and a few shells until I went down to D.C. to spend the weekend at Mat and Emily's place. Pulling up to their house was pretty much the first time I heard that sound, the song of the cicadas, in about 17 years. Last time they were here, I lived out in the sticks in Virginia, but I was only 5, so I only vaguely remember it, but I do remember that sound.

When I was packing up my car at the end of the weekend, they were everywhere all over the street. I had to watch my step not to step on the dead ones and even some of the slow live ones. And the last couple days, when I take the back roads to and from work, they're flying around everywhere and hitting my windshield. No use in getting my car washed until these things have run their course. I think it's really cool, though. I mean, maybe it's silly just to think of them as special just because they're only around once every so many years, when they're not that different from a lot of other bugs that come around every year, but still, it's kind of exciting.
