Well, today and tomorrow are both special days that I won’t be able to spend with the women I should see. Tomorrow’s me and J.G.’s 2nd anniversary, but we’ve got exams this week so we won’t be able to properly observe it until later this week. And today’s Mother’s Day, but I won’t be able to go visit Mom until next week, but she called yesterday to wish me good luck on the show, and I mailed a card and left her a message today. Speaking of the show, I’m sure you’re all waiting for a full report, but I’ll save that for when I get done with exams.

Last week Dad and Linda went down to Florida for a few days of vacation after Linda had a minor surgery, and they asked me to dogsit Shelby and Klaus for them while they were out of town, which I obliged. So last weekend, a day before their flight, I called to make sure everything was cool, and Dad broke the news to me that I’d only have one dog to look after. Klaus, our smelly little dachsund, who’d survived 14 years and a 3-story fall a couple years ago, had finally passed away in his sleep a couple days before. He was old, but we never really expected him to go out like that, so suddenly. He had a good long life, though, and he went out peacefully.

It was a little weird coming down and taking care of Shelby without Klaus around. Klaus’s leash was even still there hanging from the railing with Shelby’s. But Shelby lived with us at Dad’s house for a couple years before Linda brought Klaus too, and I’m closer to Shelby anyway, so it wasn’t that bad. I always love spending time with Shelby, she’s such a sweet dog. It was hard sometimes having to get up early enough to walk and feed her before going to school for the day, and come home straight from work to walk her again.

But all in all that’s not a lot of work, and the trade-off is staying at Dad’s house for a few days, which, compared to my apartment, really is a vacation. His kitchen is a wonder, always overstocked with homecooked meals in tupperware, frozen dinners, lunchmeat and candy. I go hungry sometimes in my house, but never in his. Also, being away from my place got me out of my usual bad habits that I fall into when I procrastinate on schoolwork, which helped me get a couple papers done last week.

But this week is going to be the real rough one. Basically, I have ALL of my exams this semester on Tuesday and Wednesday. So I have to get ready for those, plus do a couple papers and a big-ass portfolio, all in the next 3 or 4 days. Wish me luck.
