For the past couple semesters, J.G. has been participating in an improv group on her campus, and they do performances every few weeks, but I’d never gotten around to visiting her at school on a weekend when there was a performance. This past Sunday was the last one of the semester, so I made sure to take off work and come up for it. It works out well, because I got to see her perform, and in 2 weeks she gets to see my band perform. I had to work Saturday night, but I got off relatively early at 9pm, and got right on the road from there. It was actually kind of nice to make the drive up to Allentown at night, usually when I drive up to see her it’s in the afternoon and I face hellish traffic at some point on 83, but it was pretty bare on the roads and I made great time. It’s kind of funny to visit J.G. at school because Cedar Crest is an all-girl’s school and security is very tight, so any visiting boyfriend is kind of in his girl’s custody, staying at their side at all times. Her friends will say things like “is that your boy?”, like you’re her property. It’s a funny role reversal. On Sunday we slept in and relaxed until it was time for her rehearsal, and I went and sat in the back row of the theatre and read a book while they went through the scenes for the show. The improv group, F.A.D.E.D., is an interesting concept. Its main goal is diversity education, so each member is assigned a character with a particular identity and then they’re given scenes in which to interact and improvise. There’s some humor but also drama, and various social issues are addressed. J.G.’s character, Erin, is a Jewish lesbian, so I got to see her flirt with another girl, which was kinda funny. She had one big scene where she got to get really upset and yell at someone, it was kind of shocking to see, because she really never raises her voice. All in all it was an entertaining show and I was very proud of her. Afterwards I took her out to dinner at Cracker Barrel, because she always wants to go to Cracker Barrel, and we chowed down. I hung around late and got on the road at like 11pm, but the drive was again relaxing and uneventful, despite some sporadic rain. This week I was on the grind to finish a review for my review writing class, but I got it done on Tuesday and it came out well. I should’ve turned it in a long time ago, I told the professor I’d have it last week, but when I couldn’t find the time I decided to just skip class that day. Then when I went to class to turn it in yesterday, it turned out that NOBODY had gone to class on Thursday. One girl showed up, saw noone was there, and left. And this was just 2 days after the professor lectured us about not missing any more classes for the last few weeks of the semester. It was really funny, in a cruel way. It’s really a miserable class, I like doing the assignments but the classtime is always squandered on stupid shit, it’s one of those classes where there are constantly handouts being passed around, I have a huge pile of papers from that class alone stuffed into my notebook. But the semester really is winding down quickly, I’ve got a couple papers due every week for the next 2 weeks, and then exams. Hopefully this weekend I can find the time to get a start on all that. -al
