Although I’ve been working in a kitchen full of opportunities to burn myself for a couple months shy of a year now, last week was the first time I got burnt enough that I think it might leave a scar. I’m usually pretty careful putting stuff into the pizza oven, and I have the benefit of height and long arms that I don’t have to reach very far in there, but I slipped up and burnt the back of my right hand for just a split second, but it left a dark burn mark that happened to be in the exact shape of the state of Virginia, I kid you not. Over the past few days it’s started to actually hurt, and the skin has been flaking and I’ve been picking at it and it looks pretty gross and not as Virginia-like. Tonight I finished my taxes, and tomorrow I’m going to mail them out and get it in right under the wire. Because that’s how I roll, I like to live dangerously. I got to use my dad’s fancy tax software, which made it pretty simple. Turns out I owe a little to federal, but am getting back twice as much from the state. I would’ve finished it last night, but I realized I didn’t have any paperwork for my bank account. But when I asked them today, turns out that since I collected less than $10 in interest, I don’t have to report it. On Tuesday I had another math test, and I really didn’t even give it any thought until the day of the test, and broke out the books and did a little studying during a slow period at work that morning. But amazingly, when I got the test enough of it made sense that I think I passed. Probably. Really, all I need is to get a D on this test and the next test, and I’ll get a C for the class, so my expectations aren’t high. We’ll see, though. For the 2nd year in a row, I spent Easter with J.G. and her family. They’re so hospitable to me, it’s nice. I even got a basket of candy and my own chocolate bunny, although it was a hollow one and I guess it got left in a sunbeam and melted, so it looked all deflated, which was kind of cool. J.G.’s school has a 4 day weekend for the holiday, so I actually got to spend a couple days with her for once. It seems like this semester we never get to see each other for more than 24 hours at a time, at least enough that 48 consecutive hours feels rare and precious. This past weekend also marked the 23-month mark for our relationship. We’re almost a toddler! Next month is a big one, 2 years. Hopefully we’ll find a good way to mark the occasion. -al
