pray for Mojo
Last week after I got out of class, I got some directions to a bar down on Bel Air Road called the Mojo, and went down to see an early show. I'd never been to the Mojo before, but it used to be called Cafe Tattoo, when some of my bandmates played there back in the day. But I was there to see my friend Candy open for Mary Lou Lord, who she'd met an Elliott Smith tribute last year.

Candy wasn't one of the opening acts billed in the paper, so I wasn't sure til the day before that she'd be playing, and then found out that she'd be playing first at 7:30 sharp. But it took me longer than expected to get to the place, so when I got there she was already onstage, but I caught the last few songs of her set. The bar was pretty full considering how early it was, and she went over really well with the audience. Anjy, who set up the Elliott tribute with Candy at the Ottobar a couple months ago, was there, and Candy asked her to come up and sing "Bled White" with her. Then Candy finished her set with an a cappella rendition of a Scottish folktune, which was a very ballsy choice but it sounded great and she got quite an ovation.

I got to talk to Candy for a bit after her set and caught up with Anjy, and then I stuck around for the rest of the show, since it was still pretty early. The other openers were solid, and the band that played before Mary Lou Lord, Gingersol, were also the backing band she is touring with. I'd never heard much of Mary Lou's music before, but she was a very charming performer, and kept the audience in the palm of her hand. All in all it was a fun night and I'm glad I got to come out and support a friend.
