Wow, I’m a dumbass. Listen to this: for the past 4 years that I’ve been going to Towson University, every semester has started on the Wednesday of the first week of class. Now, I knew that school was starting this week, but I never really took a long hard look at the exact date, I just assumed classes started on Wednesday like they always have. And I’ve been operating under the assumption all along, until Saturday night, when I was hanging out with some friends who informed me that classes start on Monday. Which isn’t really a problem, I didn’t have anything else planned for those 2 days, but it’s still just kind of ridiculous to realize when school really starts less than 48 hours before my first class. Of course, it’s been snowing all weekend, and there’s a good chance class will be cancelled on Monday anyway, but time will tell. I was thinking of going to see my Mom this week “before” class starts, but the snow already put a nix on that anyway. She got back from her vacation last week on her birthday, so I still need to go down there and pay her a visit, but it’ll have to wait until a weekend now, unless she ends up coming up with her mom to see Grammy’s sister in Timonium, which she might do this week. Last week I did make time to go out to Delaware to hang with my boy Scott for a couple days. He’s still living in Newark, now rooming with Uttie, who we went to high school with. It was a pretty low key visit, since it was so cold out that we couldn’t really go walk down Main Street like the old days or anything. Mostly we hung around his place watching TV and messing with music and stuff. He played me his new demo, which is pretty wild, and we did some stuff on my mixer. For kicks, we went to the video game store and he picked up a couple used Playstation 2 games, but Uttie’s system is old and unreliable and wouldn’t play the games, even though they’re in perfectly good condition. But we busies ourselves well enough with Activision Anthology, which is one of those games that compiles a whole shitload of old Atari 2600 games on one disc. Some of them are great, like Freeway, which is kind of a proto-Frogger with a chicken, and Enduro, which is a great early racing game. But then, there are a lot of barely playable games on there that are better off forgotten. Still, the game has a bitchin’ ‘80’s soundtrack. I’m kind of glad that school is starting up, though, if only because I’ve been kind of listless the past couple weeks, especially after J.G. went back to school last week. I go through dry spells for months at a time, but then I’ll drink fairly regularly for a while. For instance, I’ve bought four 6-packs in the past week, and before that it had been probably a couple months since I’d drank that much. It’s nice, though. It’s not really habit-forming for me, and I never get really wasted. But I kind of like my life better when I’m too busy to mess around with that stuff. -al
