So a few weeks ago, on New Year’s Eve Eve to be exact, while my brother was still in town for the holidays, we went to a show here in Baltimore, a tribute to Elliott Smith. It was organized by our friend Candy, and Anjy, who I’d known online back in the day. I wasn’t sure how well it was going to go, since they’re not exactly professional concert promotors, and the bill was mostly unknown local folks, but the whole thing came off really well. The Ottobar was fuller than I’d seen it in quite a while (although that says more about the shows I usually go to than anything else), and on the whole they ran ahead of schedule and everything went pretty well. One of the weird things about the night was how many people I ran into. In a complete coincidence, the film crew that Candy and Anjy hired to document the concert included my roommate Mike, and his friend Landon, and our old roommate Sean. So it was cool to see them all there, plus Mike’s girlfriend Shannon. Mat was also there taking photos. It’s so rare that I run into so many friends at shows, it was nice. Most of the performers were solo acoustic acts playing Elliott’s quieter early material, of which Candy was one of the best. Toward the end of the night there were a couple full bands playing some of the later, Figure 8 stuff, which was pretty cool. All in all, Candy and Anjy raised a lot money for the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund, and everyone had a good time. Anyway, I never got around to mentioning the show on here so there you have it.
